Minister of Agriculture and Associate Minister of Trade and Export Growth Damien O’Connor last night presented the 2018 New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) Robin Davidson Memorial Award for Agritech Excellence to Sir William Gallagher, Chair and CEO of Gallagher Group.
The award is for enduring partnerships in the New Zealand agricultural technology industry. It recognises support for the industry, enthusiasm for exporting, and a willingness to constantly innovate.
Receiving the award at the National Agricultural Fieldays in Hamilton, New Zealand, Sir William gave a short history of the company starting with his father Bill Gallagher Senior’s invention of the world’s first electric fence for livestock in the late 1930s.
Today, Gallagher Group is a global leader in the innovation, manufacture and marketing of animal management, security, fuel systems and contract manufacturing solutions. This year, the company celebrates 80 years in business.
Stephen Hoffman, International Sales Executive, Gallagher Group, says: “Right from the early days, Sir William would spend night after night on the road. ‘Here today, gone tomorrow’ wasn’t the case for Sir William, it was ‘here today, gone tonight’. His plan was to travel the world, taking in as many stops as physically possible, and repeating the exercise four or five times a year to meet as many people as possible in the agricultural industry, to truly understand their needs.
“Sir William still maintains extremely regular contact with employees, customers and business partners throughout the world. He spends up to 150 days a year on the road representing Gallagher and its philosophies, communicating across language and social barriers, while also emphasising the ethics and integrity of his professional and personal dealings.”
